The most important quality for a good kitchen surface is durability. Your kitchen counters receive more wear than virtually any other surface in your home.
Olympic Marble recommends two types of product for kitchens, each with its own characteristics:
Solid Surface
Durable, versatile, and beautiful. Solid surface pieces can be machined like wood, and are famous for their invisible seams. These products are heat-resistant, but can be scratched, and burning pots can damage them.
Quartz
The ultimate in tough, resilient kitchen surfaces. You may pay a little more for Quartz, but you'll have the most wear-resistant product available.
